Media Release – 29 May 2019

LAUNCH OF 2019 SIA CONFERENCE

This year’s leading forum in Asia-Pacific for information-sharing and debate on submarines and submarine matters, the 5th Submarine Science, Technology and Engineering Conference 2019 (SubSTEC5), has been formally launched.

The launch of SubSTEC5, which is being convened by the Submarine Institute of Australia (SIA) and will take place from 18-21 November in Fremantle, was conducted by Western Australia’s Minister for Defence Issues, Hon Paul Papalia CSC MLA, at Curtin University in Perth today.

The launch also included a three-dimensional visualisation of Australia’s first submarine, HMAS AE1.

SIA Executive Director, David Nicholls said: “With the help of Minister Papalia, we are encouraging as many as possible participants in SubSTEC5, which promises to be another outstanding SIA conference.

“There are numerous ways for people who are based locally, interstate or overseas to participate in the conference, including by attending, presenting a paper and/or through sponsorship.

“The call for conference papers is closing shortly and therefore, the SIA is urging anyone who would like to present at the conference to submit an abstract for a paper before the deadline.”

Suggested topics for presentations include, but are not limited to:

  • Offshore science/technology/engineering;
  • Engineering design;
  • Emerging/disruptive submarine technologies;
  • Research and development/test and evaluation policy and management;
  • Workforce skills development;
  • Sovereignty/intellectual property protection;
  • Integrating multi-national technology; and
  • Complex program management.

The theme for SubSTEC5 is “innovation and investment in the subsea environment”.

“The SIA is keen for SubSTEC5 to attract broader industry interest,” Mr Nicholls said.

“While the majority of presentations will focus on submarines, submariners and defence industry, the conference theme means speeches from senior executives from offshore resources exploration companies and related stakeholders would also be welcome.”

Anyone who has an interest in providing a presentation at SubSTEC5 can find out more information about this on the SIA’s website, www.submarineinstitute.com.

SubSTEC5 is supported by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology.
