Next steps for future submarines

Media Release – 30 September 2016

NEXT STEPS FOR FUTURE SUBMARINES

Media statement from the Executive Director of the Submarine Institute of Australia, David Nicholls:

“The signing of the first contract as part of the Future Submarine Program is a major step in the implementation of the most significant investment in submarines in Australian history.

“The contract, which is for design and mobilisation, is between the Australian Government and the design partner for the program, French company DCNS.

“Another milestone is the announcement that US company Lockheed Martin has been chosen as the combat system integrator for the future submarines; the Submarine Institute of Australia congratulates both companies.

“The selection of Lockheed Martin should be a catalyst for the involvement of smart Australian technology and local innovation in combat system development – particularly in emerging sensor and data processing – supporting our combat system alliance with the US.

“The progress in program implementation, with these announcements, will result in numerous opportunities for the improvement in submarine systems capability.”
