Leading Indo-Pacific forum on submarines

20th June 2016

Media Release – 21 June 2016

LEADING INDO-PACIFIC FORUM ON SUBMARINES

Early bird registrations for Asia-Pacific’s leading forum on submarine matters – the Submarine Institute of Australia’s (SIA) eighth biennial conference – will close on 30 June.

National and international speakers, including political leaders, have been invited to provide speeches and other presentations at the event, which will be held in Canberra on 15-16 November 2016.

SIA President, Andy Keough said: “The theme of this year’s conference is ‘From Collins to the Future Submarine – the challenge of sustaining an effective submarine capability’.

“The conference will include invited keynote speakers, including Mr John Coles CB FRAEng, leader of the Coles Review team credited with the ultimate achievement of required availability of the Collins-class submarine fleet.

“The SIA is now inviting participation from international audiences to discuss the rapidly growing interest in acquisition of submarine forces throughout the Indo-Pacific region.

“This year’s conference will be held at a time when Australia is implementing its largest ever defence procurement program for 12 submarines to be built in Australia to a design jointly developed with DCNS.

“Elsewhere in the Asia-Pacific region there have been announcements of future submarine building programs for several countries which have similar interests in acquiring capable submarine forces. Some of them have even included aspirations for adoption of nuclear propulsion.”

The SIA Conference will bring together professionals from around the world to promote informed discussion and research in the fields of submarine operations, engineering, history and commercial sub-sea engineering – otherwise known as submarine matters, the objective of the SIA.
