Latest update 13 November 2009 - Note program change with 'State of the Union' after lunch. Flyer updated.

SIA Workshop 2009  - Registrations have now closed

The Workshop to be held this year by the SIA falls in the off-year between biennial Conferences and takes place in an environment where the RAN is facing a significant expansion.  Not only is it to acquire two Landing Ships and three Air Warfare Destroyers, but its Submarine Force is to double in size.  This is in no small part attributable to considerable effort invested by the SIA in its submission to the Defence White Paper and in the years that preceded it.

The Navy is facing challenges in how it tackles the almost unique prospect of doubling the size of the Submarine Force and this provides the SIA with new opportunities to support that growth.  Having achieved a position of  influence, how should it position itself in an environment where submarines have suddenly taken centre stage?  As it enters its second decade, the time is ripe for the Institute to take a good hard look at itself and determine how it might best move ahead.  The Workshop, therefore, will benefit from open and free discussion about the future; an activity that needs the active participation of its membership.

To avoid a clash between ourselves and the Kokoda Foundation, we kick off with our Annual Dinner on Wednesday 18 November; this year at the Royal Canberra Golf Club.  On Thursday, the Workshop at the Great Hall, University House will feature a brief from the Acting President of the SIA (Peter Horobin) followed by some syndicate work facilitated by that excellent Master of Ceremonies, Rear Admiral Peter Clarke, RAN Rtd.  After lunch, the SIA will finalise the Workshop and then hold its Annual General Meeting.
